Director - Michael Broad

Supporting Michael is a team of experienced adult coaches and former players. Next Gen Rugby Coaching prides itself on offering both players and coaches a quality education and experience and this can only happen by having a quality team.

Our team of coaches have all coached and played rugby union at high levels and each member is grateful for the opportunity to assist in the improvement of our Next Generation of players and coaches.

More about Michael

Michael Broad

After 5 years as the Director of Coaching, the Next Gen Rugby Coaching team is now headed by Michael Broad. Michael is a Rugby AU Level 4 accredited coach and has over 50 years of experience playing & coaching at all levels of rugby.

Michael brings to Next Gen Rugby Coaching an extraordinary level of practical on field coaching and off field administration expertise having been the Director of Sport at St. Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace for 24 years as well as years of professional coaching along with his representative playing and coaching career.

Michael has had professional development stints at various Super Rugby franchises – namely, the NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds, Western Force, the Sharks of Durban and more recently with the Mitre 10 Cup team from NZ – the Tasman Makos in 2018. In 2019 and 2020, Michael attended the Rohrig Rugby Development Academy facilitated by staff of the Mitre 10 Cup team from Otago RU and more recently was invited to attend the Crusaders International Academy for 2 weeks in June 2023.

Phil Mooney

Phil has provided the Next Gen team with the highest quality and professional level of rugby coaching. While Phil’s availability throughout the year is limited, he is always willing to offer his services to coach our young men and women of the future. Phil’s knowledge and expertise is outstanding and we the coaching staff – and those whom he coaches are so very fortunate indeed to experience such a fantastic rugby mentor.

Mark Chisholm

Mark has provided the Next Gen team with an enthusiastic and professional brand of rugby coaching. His love of the game and coaching is infectious. Mark loves to get involved in all aspects of coaching with whatever age group he is assigned. Players continue to rave about his knowledge, love of the game and his ability to impart his wide range of skills and understanding of the game.

Joe Tomane

Joe is a very welcome addition to our coaching ranks. Joe has an incredible level experience in rugby having played for the Wallabies, Brumbies and numerous professional clubs overseas. Joe’s expertise and professional experience in rugby is of the highest order and he brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the Next Gen coaching staff.

Fletcher Dyson

Fletcher has a vast level of experience in rugby having played for the Wallabies and Qld Reds. Fletcher’s knowledge and expertise in rugby is first class and adds quality hands on experience to the Next Gen coaching staff.

Steve Kefu

Steve is a member of the famous Kefu family. As a player he was very clever with exceptional skill, vision and was without doubt a natural athlete and rugby player. He has a very sharp eye and has the ability to pick up even the slightest of technical faults and is an outstanding skills coach. Next Gen Rugby Coaching is proud to have Steve Kefu in our team.

Josh Afu

Josh is one of our most senior rugby identities on our coaching staff having played International rugby for Tonga; Qld Reds as well as for the Newcastle Falcons in the UK as well as stints in France, Japan and Hong Kong. His experience and expertise is such a wonderful asset for our team - but an even better opportunity for our clinic attendees to have someone of Josh’s calibre to learn from.

Ian Jones

Ian joined our coaching staff in 2017. Ian is a highly experienced teacher and rugby coach. Ian has taught at a number of prestigious GPS schools where he has coached the First XV with great success. Ian has innate ability to impart his knowledge and wisdom to the players under his care. He is extremely well liked by his players as he brings a high level of fun, enjoyment and expertise to his sessions.

Jon Fitzgerald

Jon is one of the most experienced rugby coaches to join the Next Gen Rugby Coaching staff. Jon has many years of experience coaching rugby at all levels of junior rugby and representative rugby. We are privileged to have someone of Jon’s caliber assisting in the program presentation at our holiday coaching clinics. Players and coaches of all levels will learn an incredible amount from this very professional rugby mentor.

David Miles

David is one of our most experienced school coaches and administrators. David is currently the Head of Girls sport at BSHS. David has an incredible record of success wherever he coaches - including AIS First XV Premierships at St. Edmunds College and Marist Ashgrove. David’s expertise and knowledge of the game is first class and provides our coaching staff with an incredible sounding board for constant improvement with our programs.

Sione Fukofuka

Sione has a rich and vast rugby history and background - and we congratulate him on his selection as Head Coach of the USA Women’s 15 Rugby Team 2024. His knowledge of the game and his own personal experiences provides the Next Gen team with an outstanding leader in his field. Sione brings years of teaching experience into the rugby coaching environment which provides those men and women under his care the best opportunities to learn and develop.

Pat Byron

Pat has been an integral member of our coaching staff - specifically at our holiday clinics. Pat has been involved in so many areas of rugby - professional, club and school rugby. His experience provides our team with a wonderful resource and he offers the young players under his guidance a unique understanding of the skills and techniques needed in the game of rugby. Along with his incredible experience, Pat is also a terrific human being - humble and respectful. He is a great asset to our coaching staff.

Evan Willis

Evan brings years of playing and coaching experience to our coaching staff. His rugby knowledge and ability to bring the best out of the players in his care is second to none. His teaching and leadership experience provides all involved in coaching with an extraordinary level of support, mentorship and technical advice.

Michael Hayes

Next Gen Rugby Coaching was delighted to welcome Mike to the team when he moved to Brisbane at the end of 2017. Mike has an incredible passion for the game and coaching. Mike’s ability to transfer information & knowledge to his players is a strength and we at Next Gen Rugby Coaching are thrilled to have a coach of his standing coaching our next generation of rugby players.

Neil Wharton

Neil brings a quality of instruction, expertise and development that all members of the Next Gen Coaching staff are thrilled to be associated with. Neil’s experience is a wonderful addition to our team, and those young players who are lucky enough to be coached by him – will respect and admire everything that he has to offer.

John Tabrett

John has been a member of the Next Gen Rugby Coaching staff since the company started back in 2013. As a player “Tabs” was highly regarded throughout the QLD Premier Competition and has been considered one of best players in this competition for many years. Talk to any coach that has worked closely with John and they will tell you about his incredible vision, natural ability and game awareness. These attributes naturally make him a coach with a great future. John is certainly one of our most valuable assets.

Daniel Ritchie

Dan joined our Next Gen Rugby Coaching staff in 2017 and has always been keen to be involved in as many coaching clinics as possible. Dan brings a high level of coaching and administrational skills to our team which provides a high quality presentation and execution of our holiday programs.

Bart Ritchie

Bart has been a wonderful addition to our coaching ranks and brings years of Premier Grade football experience to our team - at Norths Rugby Club and Wests Rugby Club. Bart is an exceptional mentor for our young players and shows tremendous care and attention to each child’s involvement and development. Bart has generously given of his time to the Modified Rugby Program (Wests Rugby Club) which has been greatly appreciated by all involved.

Mick Tunny

Mick joined the Next Gen Rugby Coaching team in 2018 and it was obvious from the start that he was a very special coach, one who was willing to coach at any level and any age group. Mick has always sought advice and guidance as to his coaching journey as well as providing other coaches with his own expertise, this willingness to learn and assist others is a wonderful attribute - one which will hold him in good stead going forward.

Alex Casey

Alex has been a member of the Next Gen Rugby Coaching staff since the company started back in 2013. Case continues to play rugby at a high level in Brisbane for GPS Rugby Club having formerly played for many years at Souths Rugby Club, where he was a member of their 2015 Premiership side. Alex is certainly one of our most valuable assets and he always makes himself available to assist in any of our programs - when his job permits.

Russell Todd

Russell has been a critical member of our coaching staff over the last 5 years. Russell provides the highest level of teaching and coaching at our various clinics. Russell is always happy to coach at any age level which is invaluable for ensuring the programs are always of the highest quality.

Peter McIntosh

Peter has been a fantastic addition to our coaching staff over the last few years. Peter has been able to bring a wide range of quality coaching experiences to our team, and is heavily involved in our holiday coaching clinics - as well as assisting with our specialist 1 on 1 program.

Luke Oxford

Next Gen Rugby Coaching was extremely fortunate to have Luke join their coaching staff in 2025. Luke has an incredible teaching and coaching record - coaching successfully both at Schools and Premier Grade club level. As well as assisting with our Next Gen clinics, Luke assisted with our Confidence in Contact program at his former school - St. Patrick’s College.

Jack Hawksley

Jack is one of our young, rising stars in our coaching ranks. Jack brings a wealth of experience for such a young coach. Jack has an innate ability to bring the best out of the players in his care. Jack has just completed his teaching degree and has been appointed as a HPE teacher at IGS. Along with his new teaching role and with his coaching experience, Jack provides Next Gen Rugby with a wonderful asset.

Tyron Mandrusiak

Tyron is another of our long serving clinic coaches. Tyron played 214 games for South’s Premier Grade over 12 seasons - averaging 100 points per season during his career. Tyron brings a wealth of rugby experience and administrative expertise to the Next Gen coaching staff and to players of all ages.

Brendan Ward

Brendan has been a member of our Next Gen Coaching staff for a number of years. Brendan comes with a strong rugby background through his playing experience at Souths RC and through his teaching at SLC. Brendan has been heavily involved with our Next Gen clinics as well as a number of clinics held for specific schools. Brendan has the ability to work with players of all ages and abilities.

Tim Carr

Tim has been a member of the Next Gen coaching staff for a number of years. Tim is currently teaching at St. Laurence's College where he is a member of their rugby coaching staff. Tim always brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to his coaching - along with a high degree of skill and technical training. Tim is always very generous in coaching at all levels at our rugby clinics.

Christian Mills

Christian joined our coaching staff in 2024 after very strong recommendations from rugby staff at Nudgee College and Norths RC. Christian is close to graduating as a secondary school teacher. As well as coaching at our Next Gen clinics, Christian has been at the forefront of our Confidence in Contact program at Padua College; St. Peter’s; St. Patrick’s College and Toowoomba Grammar School.

Russell Muir

Russell is one of those coaches who when called on, provides his players with the highest quality of instruction and care. His enthusiasm and passion for developing young rugby players is totally infectious.

Jack Geraghty

Jack is one of our newest coaches to support our coaching staff. Jack is currently on the HPE staff at Gregory Terrace - where he also went to school. Jack provides a great understanding of the game to his players having had a successful schoolboy and Colts rugby career. Jack is always prepared to assist in various programs that Next Gen run at the various schools and clinics.

James Prole

Mark has provided the Next Gen team with an enthusiastic and professional brand of rugby coaching. His love of the game and coaching is infectious. Mark loves to get involved in all aspects of coaching with whatever age group he is assigned. Players continue to rave about his knowledge, love of the game and his ability to impart his wide range of skills and understanding of the game.

Charlie Cooke

Charlie is one of our youngest coaches who joins Cale Maurice, Ben Mooney and James Prole in our Mentoring program for young aspiring coaches. Charlie went to GT where he played for the First XV for 2 years; he then went on to play Colts 1 and Premier Grade at Wests RC in his first year out of school. Charlie coached with and was mentored by some of our senior coaches at our Next Gen clinics.

Ben Mooney

Ben is one of our youngest coaches who joins Cale Maurice, Charlie Cooke and James Prole in our Mentoring program for young aspiring coaches. Ben went to BGS where he played for their First XV for 2 years; he then went on to play Colts 1 for Wests RC for 2 years and then graduated to Grades at Wests.

Cale Maurice

Cale is one of our youngest coaches who joins James Prole, Charlie Cooke and Ben Mooney in our Mentoring program for young aspiring coaches. Cale went to TGS in 2024 where he played for the First XV; he then played Colts 1 for Norths and Brisbane Fiji U18 in his first year out of school. Cale coached with and was mentored by some of our senior coaches at the Next Gen clinics and also coached in the Terrace U11 rugby program.
